3rd Ward

3rd Ward

Third Ward today is the most diverse of the city's wards. It includes a sports and entertainment area, university, a residential neighborhood, and a 1.5 million square foot mixed use complex called Gateway Village. This innovative complex combines technology-oriented office space, over 500 new residential units, a public park, shops and restaurants. Gateway Village is attracting attention nationwide for creative positioning of a mixed-use development in an urban setting.

The recent addition of Johnson and Whales to the Third Ward has given the area a buzz with the bustling foot traffic of students and staff that are constantly increasing amongst the new dormitories and street level classrooms. The future of the Third Ward is bright with the growing enrollment of the University and the economic enhancement from their presence. With the unique anchor of Gateway Village and Johnson and Whales on its western edge, development in Third Ward is expected to fill in moving eastward on Trade Street toward The Square.

There are currently plans to build a high-rise condominium in the space between this anchor and the Square. There is also a new commuter rail station and hub for the city's mass transit system is proposed on in this space on West Trade Street.
